<p>i also think it's a problem that hosting cities and venues are chosen as though they are interchangeable (lowest bidder, etc) rather than in places where we actually have local connections embedded in both the academic and geographic communities.</p><p>when i was in grad school we used to have "local arrangements chairs." but the sigplan venues i've been to lately don't seem to have that anymore?</p>

<p>some opinions about academic conferences:<br />- i think talking to each other in person is good and important.<br />- the ideal of the "inclusive international conference" doesn't exist. one can only make intentional decisions about what kinds of inclusion to prioritize.<br />- it's a problem that junior folks are expected to attend big international conferences regularly in order to advance their careers, especially when their circumstances are by default *not* prioritized as inclusivity criteria</p>

But until that happens, the fragmentation is real. I get that fragmentation is central to the design of Mastodon. It just happens to be the opposite of what *I* want, which is why this is never going to be my default social network.</p>
