@whitequark I was at a conference when captchas came up and that problem of cheap labour in other regions was mentioned. The response by the free market loving person on the stage was that it is expected, that with globalization and the internet the wages will adjust to a global average and thus captchas will become too expensive to solve by human hands. It sounded like Sci Fi then and still does.

@whitequark i thought it was there because of ddos and spam...

people misunderstand the purpose of captchas a lot. they're not there to prevent scraping. they're there to tax it. at a really low rate too

just noticed that they also have a browser extension that lets you never see cloudflare prompt you for a captcha again. wild. tor browser users take notice^W^W^W^W^W

reminder that captchas are extremely, *unbelievably* cheap to bypass. $500 gives you a million captchas a month, or a third of that for hcaptcha, etc

the only thing they're "completely automatically testing" is how much cheaper human time is in the global south

solving them with 'AI' is economically meaningless. you just go to e.g. https://anti-captcha.com

@dabeaz Wow, interesting. Got it sorted out, eventually, right? They may have put that "delay" there so nobody can snitch the username right away, or something.

@rolle A PSA: I followed these instructions, but encounted a problem of being "rate limited" when trying to change the name of the new account to the old one.

Stumbled across a reddit comment that if you just clicked the change button as fast as possible for like a minute (getting repeated "rate limited" errors), it would eventually work.

As a SW guy, I'm thinking "WTF?!?" But, I try it and after about 45s of this nonsense--username changed.
