Left foot is stroking/pushing, right foot is gliding (so this person would be traveling directly off the right side of the page).

The first step is to match the red outline: with the foot flat on the ground, rotate it outwards about the Z-axis. This ensures you're pushing normal to the blade, rather than parallel.

The second step is to match the blue position: tilt the foot slightly inwards, about the axis running from heel to toe. This puts you on the inside edge of the blade, giving it more "bite" into the ice to generate the opposing force.

The bottom sketch depicts the feet in the same position, but from a different angle.

@ganbold@wvy.my.id honestly, quite confusing for me personally

@chadkoh Hah, glad this can help! It's always easier to accidentally catch the toe picks when they're larger than one is accustomed to (changing blades; getting different rental skates; going from hockey to figure skates it's even more pronounced).

Equipment aside, catching the toe pick can also be a sign of improper stroking technique (I've been trying to fix this on my right foot for ages). It's very hard to unlearn the muscle memory of walking, where the foot points forward and the ankle flexes up and down as the foot rocks from heel to toe. During a stroke, the foot should point out to the side (instead of forward), and push off the ground from the arch/inside midfoot (instead of the toe). This position avoids engaging the toe pick at all, which should avoid a lot of falling :)

(Sorry if you or your daughter already knew that! I've just been thinking about this a lot recently because I'm working on my technique too)

@catalyst@tilde.zone @yaoibot@eepykitty.lol aah thank you, yaoi bot followed :neocat_rainbow:

@ionchy (disclaimer: I don't understand any dialects at all) I feel like it's a combo of high and low registers + familiarity between parties? My only reference points are EEAAO (where Evelyn and 公公 yell at each other in Canto unless it's an Emotionally Significant Soliloquy), and my family (where Teochew is for yelling at family members, Canto is for ordering at restaurants/haggling, and Mandarin is for everything else
