WTF kind of spam is this? (Of course, it could be not-spam and someone who accidentally emailed me…which is arguably more disturbing.)

No idea if newcomers share those feelings now.

Whoever becomes the next president of USA, it's a lose-lose situation. China will still eventually surpass USA in economy. America is cornered. It was the dominant country in 20th century but not in this 21st century. You should still vote, I guess. It's your right. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@khinsen @dabeaz yeah, this is very easily observed in young people who are used to being passive consumers of technology (i.e. spend all they on their phones but don't seem to understand the basic processes that make it work). I think it's very hard to fight against the curiosity-killing aspects of modern technology with black-box algorithms and a default dismissal of open source/free software tools in favor of walled gardens. But I agree that we should not be seeing this in scientific circles.

However, knowing how to solve/approach problems seems to be an essential skill.

Instead of asking questions like "how do I do X in Python", I think a lot of people would be better served by asking a question like "what am I actually trying to do here?" Or "how do I decompose X into smaller subproblems?"

Watching my kids, I now see difficulties going all the way back to math "story problems."

Do we expect that all scientists became computer scientists in addition to their own fields?
