<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@shriramk" class="u-url mention">@<span>shriramk</span></a></span> </p><p>I understand now. That is frustrating. </p><p>I wasn&#39;t nerdsniping at all, just trying to grok the issues. <br />The fedi model works for me, but I don&#39;t rely on the server feed at all. </p><p>I also generally don&#39;t have people discussing things I&#39;ve published (since I generally don&#39;t have publications). </p><p>Not being aware that it&#39;s happening is problematic though. I am a little surprised that people didn&#39;t bother to tag you in on the discussion. Seems a bit rude.</p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@WiseWoman" class="u-url mention">@<span>WiseWoman</span></a></span></p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@film_girl" class="u-url mention">@<span>film_girl</span></a></span> parents gonna try!</p>
<p>Oh man my parents picked me up from the airport playing the Taylor Swift Christmas album. They are being so sweet so I can’t even tell them none of us claim this. Like it’s so precious and nice of them to try but man, no one wants that!</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@johntimaeus" class="u-url mention">@<span>johntimaeus</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@WiseWoman" class="u-url mention">@<span>WiseWoman</span></a></span> <br />So yes: those I follow on other servers, things work out fine. (Though my lord, try starring a post without viewing it from the right place, wow. I know how to do it; it&#39;s just not worth the bother.) But when a server you care about thinks mastodon.social is not full of good people, but that&#39;s where you&#39;ve made your home, you&#39;re…kinda&#39; screwed. •</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@johntimaeus" class="u-url mention">@<span>johntimaeus</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@WiseWoman" class="u-url mention">@<span>WiseWoman</span></a></span> <br />So if I seem intentionally obtuse…that is not an unfair characterization. Early on I really did work to understand all this stuff, good nerd that I am. And then I realized I was just getting nerdsniped, and I mean that in the pejorative sense. I don&#39;t want to know, I don&#39;t want to care! I&#39;m perfectly capable — but I *want* to be obtuse!</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@johntimaeus" class="u-url mention">@<span>johntimaeus</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@WiseWoman" class="u-url mention">@<span>WiseWoman</span></a></span> <br />Now you might be like &quot;no no, you&#39;re getting the terminology wrong, and you don&#39;t quite understand how Mastodon works&quot;. In response I&#39;d say:</p><p>- Once upon a time I did, I&#39;ve just paged it all out.<br />- I just don&#39;t care. The minutiae of how servers peer with each other are relevant, but I want them to be irrelevant. Things that make them relevant are active obstacles to my goal.<br />↵</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@johntimaeus" class="u-url mention">@<span>johntimaeus</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@WiseWoman" class="u-url mention">@<span>WiseWoman</span></a></span> <br />A few months ago I had an interaction where someone I was following (on that server) said something intriguing, so I clicked on their post to read up-thread, and found a very interesting thread that was discussing…one of my papers. Everyone on the thread I think just assumed I was on the server, and I had no idea the discussion was even taking place. ↵</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@johntimaeus" class="u-url mention">@<span>johntimaeus</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fediscience.org/@WiseWoman" class="u-url mention">@<span>WiseWoman</span></a></span> <br />Because I can&#39;t even SEE it. None of it shows up on my feed by default, so unless I follow a person I don&#39;t even know it&#39;s taking place. Plus one of the ones I care about has some issue w/ mastodon.social and so doesn&#39;t automatically peer with it or whatever, so there&#39;s added friction in seeing content. ↵</p>
