<p>think i'm gonna switch back from mobile firefox to mobile chrome. the inability of firefox to play videos in a useful way is infuriating</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@whitequark" class="u-url mention">@<span>whitequark</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://social.treehouse.systems/@rcombs" class="u-url mention">@<span>rcombs</span></a></span> a lot more of my friends are on Bluesky than here, despite being a pretty OG open/nerd, with likely top-5% follower count here, and having invested a loooot more time here. </p><p>I've made some new friends here (ironically, I'd count <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@danilo" class="u-url mention">@<span>danilo</span></a></span> as one of them!) but the bottom line is that network effects cut off a lot of people, that's why large networks win even if your only goal is "only friends, no 'followers'/influence".</p>

The key point here is that Bluesky is not only not immune to all the things that have happened to other centralized platforms before it, but basically in a position where it's probably going to ultimately <em>want</em> to go that same direction sooner or later. Unfortunately, most signs point more towards sooner than to later.</p><p>It's all well and good that they pretend at being open, but since they aren't really, it's ultimately meaningless. But most importantly, that can't be a point of consideration just solely on its own. After all, most of what Google does is open, but they're hardly good...</p>
