<p>Filipino-American Maria Ressa won the Nobel Peace Prize for fighting against disinformation. I hope you all will listen to her.</p><p>The Philippines was a colony of the United States. We were the victims of this information war. Now it&#39;s the Americans. The Philippines was your &quot;petridish&quot;. The Philippinization of America is happening before your eyes.</p>

<p>Fortunately, it was only temporary. Democracy was restored and now in &quot;peace&quot;, I was able to get back to my studies and decided to pursue computer science and neuroscience. Science was (is) very expensive for me to pursue under authoritarianism. We had very little support.</p><p>It turned out the Russian Disinformation campaign started in the Philippines in 2012. Both Duterte and Trump were elected presidents in the same year 2016.</p>

<p>It took a toll on my mental health and caused me to perform at school very poorly, so I moved to a different school and repeated senior highschool twice. </p><p>Never have I ever dreamed of joining academia because I thought the political crisis in my country wouldn&#39;t end and thought I&#39;ll just be an artist.</p>

<p>Critics of the government were called terrorists. (Even Taylor Swift called for the Junk Anti-Terror Bill.)</p><p>I was in highschool when we had the authoritarian Duterte as our leader. I participated in protests as an artist for human rights.</p><p>We had things worse: Duterte declared Martial Law, and implemented War on Drugs which resulted in many unjust extrajudicial killings. A relative and acquaintances of mine were victims. </p><p>We also had bomb threats in school campuses.</p>

<p>Criminalizing student protests? Suppression of academic freedom? We had all these in the Philippines years ago.</p><p>Professors and student protestors were &quot;red tagged&quot; as communists. Soldiers confiscated books from libraries they called subversive. Vandalism of libraries. </p><p>🧵</p>
