I feel like it&#39;s been there forever, clearly I haven&#39;t had a need for it in my early days...</p><p>The most wicked part of /proc and /sys, I once wrote a pure shell (for speed) parser for a few files there, POC to be rewritten in C later. So it turned out using bash read caused it to seek around on every line with the end result that the file could get updated and get discontinuous bits of it... In the end I slurped entire files in variables before parsing them.</p>
