My friends who have spent a lifetime learning how to make stable change on critical systems will be forced to adapt to help stabilize the tools that lost them their jobs.

Some of them will find a way through, some of them will join the Cobal programmers I have met in other industries throughout the world.

They have told me they were let go because they were getting old, or didn’t want to change. I wonder if it was a similar hype cycle that I was too new or young to see.

#ai #workersrights

CEOs “any advancement in efficiency will reduce the need for jobs”

I’ve never seen so many of my friends out of work on the promise of efficiency. I’ve never seen so many forced to work on fulfilling that promise. I’ve never seen so many of my friends out of work.

The job are in “ai” and they are not good jobs, they are not stable jobs, they don’t pay enough money, they pay with “promise”.

#ai #workersrights

🧵

It may not be his main advocacy, yet his support for this kind of freedom is indicative of his values as a leader who will defend a democratic and critical society. You can see how dictatorship encourages opposition to truth and science.

Actually, we have already gone through this, and we ought to take what we can from it. Give Chel a chance.

I was able to do it, because I felt safe with the people around me.

This is the virtue of Academic Freedom. We managed to put forward progressive, controversial and even unpopular opinions without placing ourselves in jeopardy of losing our education, and other privileges.

Everyone maintained a level of objectivity and criticism. Following that, everyone listened to one another's heartfelt stories. We were given the opportunity to show our vulnerable side - and I was already crying before it was my turn to tell everyone in the room my story.

Chel listened to everybody.
Everybody listened to him.

The room was a safe place for the exchange of ideas. Chel encouraged the students to challenge the conventional wisdom of politics. He, too, was challenged by them. But none of us felt threatened.
