I'm not sharing this post with Bluesky, they're not ready for it

I imagine a sort of cyber-gnosticism. The Internet is the real world, because it is the world of ideas; physical reality is an isolated special case, a tiny winnowing of what is possible. But ideas can encompass anything and my mind lives in the world of ideas, my mind reaches across the sea of ideas to touch the other minds in the bigger world, the true world the Internet is a tiny beachhead into—

"But the world of ideas isn't real?"

Correct, but neither am I; each day this meat imagines me

So, California folks, support the No Secret Police Act!

Everyone else, get your state electeds to file similar legislation!

All US-ians, contact your reps and ask them to support the Police not ICE Act of 2025!

As with every #STFUfriday post, I'm a lawyer in the USA. These comments are based on law in the USA. (And they apply to all people in the USA, whether or not they are citizens.) Some US states provide more protections than this.

/end

Is there anything we can do about ICE not identifying themselves? Yes!

There are at least two important legislative initiatives pending.

1. California state senators Wiener & Arreguin have filed a “No Secret Police Act” requiring police to be identifiable and banning police masking (w/exceptions)
https://sd11.senate.ca.gov/news/senators-wiener-arreguin-announce-legislation-prohibit-local-state-federal-law-enforcement

2. Federal Reps Thompson and Velasquez have a bill to prohibit ICE from using the misleading word “police” on their clothing.
https://mikethompson.house.gov/newsroom/press-releases/thompson-velazquez-seek-block-immigration-feds-identifying-local-police

/3

Right now, the law says that ICE agents just have to generally identify themselves “as an immigration officer” at the time of the arrest and the reason for the arrest.

BUT there is a movement afoot! /2

https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/8/287.8

It’s #STFUfriday!

When cops ask you questions, ask for a lawyer and then STFU:

- I am not discussing how I’m doing or where I’m going.

- Am I free to leave?

- I am not answering any questions.

- If they ask to search anything: "I do not consent to a search."

- I want to talk to a lawyer.

Lots of people, including me, are mad about ICE concealing their identities. Don’t they have to identify themselves? No.

But we can change that! More in the 🧵 .

Mastodon (and other Fedi software) should stop stripping the C2PA manifest from the EXIF of uploaded media.

In the long run there are lots of good C2PA things to be done, but for now, just get out of the way and let the emergent ecosystem of tools work with it.

Probably best as an opt-in, although in all the software I've seen, to get C2PA in your images you have to explicitly request it, so one assumes anyone who does that and shares wants to share the provenance too.

#Fediverse
