@krans ah, okay, this makes sense; i might look into it later

@whitequark I haven't dug into it that far, but I believe that Palantir's UK subsidiary doesn't position themselves as a defense contractor — more as a general contractor for data services to the public sector.

@gsuberland if you were taking money from RTX or LM i would at least ask "ok, what project?"

GPS satellites are just fine to work on for example, i think LM does them?

palantir/anduril/helsing are not fucking doing anything

@whitequark I didn't know that! I really don't want for my family to die in Latvia so while usa was our [temporary] ally I erred on taking us defense money, now I err on the side of taking Canadian defense money. But if I knew that they aren't a real defense company, I wouldn't have supported taking their money!

Thank you for this toot ❤️

(Sources would be max uwu, but I trust you)

@krans my main counterpoint here is 'this is not really a defense function'. like it happens to be done by a defense contractor but lots of orgs with no such lineage could do as good of a job

@cafkafk yeah

it's astonishing how many people look down at me for my 'the bar is so low it's underground' position of "maybe do not take money from useless defense contractors run by fascists"

this is like the MVP of having principles, and so many ostensibly caring about their impact people in OSS leadership fail it

@whitequark@mastodon.social a lot of people on hacker news / reddit didn't get that I wasn't just some hyper pascifics when I criticised anduril/helsing. I'm at least half just disgusted by the idea of doing |venture capital but what if state sponsored violence". Enshitiffication when you're dealing with peoples lives is an absolutely frightening idea. Not like the legacy defense primes are great at all, but the idea of putting sillicon valley people in charge of life and death decisions is very fucked up.
Also Palmer Lucky was kicked out of facebook, people tend to forget that. Anduril engineers aren't generally the best of the bunch, there is a reason they had to compromise on morality to get a high pay after all...
