It's just not really the design for me (just as the "one single place where everyone is" design isn't for others).

Because of it, I just have not gotten as much value out of Mastodon as on Bsky as I have from X and am starting to get from Bsky. We may just want different things. I'm glad Mastodon exists for those who want its design.

And @postweber , I did very explicitly say "instance" in my post. Apologies for not writing a full technical manuscript in it. But instances and cross-instance peering politics, etc., are central to the Mastodon experience in a way they are not on X or Bsky (for now; though Bsky is ostensibly distributed, I'm glad that for now it's not really). ↵

@fullyabstract @Chip_Unicorn

I believe one of the main PL instances decided that mastodon.social was too full of Nazis or something and hence doesn't treat it as a full peer (I'm not up on the details). That makes the discovery harder, and things less likely to appear across instances. ↵

@Chip_Unicorn

That's in a different instance. I am *very* interested in education, cogsci, and sociology, and learned a lot about it from finding and following people on Twitter. That *must* be happening here, but I don't even know where — I've seen virtually NONE of it. ↵

@Chip_Unicorn

Scanning a feed and finding people who either (a) are interesting or (b) I know is how I add them. If I'm not following them, I'm just not seeing them in my feed.

A lot of what I look for is PL discussion. Much of that happens over in a different instance that I'm not on.
