My policy is, I will open the decision message right away (because who can resist), but I don't read the reviews for 2-3 days. It's amazing how they seem so much wiser 3 days later. This lets me process rejection decisions *usefully*: once the disappointment has worn off, I'm ready to hear their message and learn from their review.</p>

The longer I take to write a paper, the easier it is to write and the more evident it is that the paper will get in. I will never convince anyone else that we write papers too soon into projects, but it's how I operate now (write papers about things that are ~2 years old), and it's mostly stress-free. āµ</p>
