<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@whitequark" class="u-url mention">@<span>whitequark</span></a></span> I agree that value is used in mathematics in a very similar sense to programming and I&#39;d imagine the first use to be in arithmetics, in sentences like &quot;what is the value of the expression 2 plus 2&quot; probaly origininally meaning somenthing like &quot;how much is 2 plus 2 worth&quot;.</p><p>I&#39;d say that variables have slightly different nuances and for instance I&#39;d often say that mathematical variable &quot;takes&quot; a value more than it having the value. </p><p>That said I would also use &quot;holding&quot; more than &quot;having&quot; to describe the relation between variables and values in a program, but I&#39;m not sure how common that is.</p>
