Yes, you can use the desktop apps to get files (and newer versions default to the newer file type that is harder to crack) but you’ve always needed a Kindle account/serial number attached to download and then to use the DeDRM tools.</p>

You’ve always needed an eink kindle to be able to download these files, even before they said they’d tske this option away. For you, to get non KFX files (harder to crack) you’d need to use an old version of Kindle for Mac or Kindle for PC. The PC version easier to run in a VM than the Mac version tho b/c of OS issues.</p>

The template file even works with 1P vaults using the 1P CLI but this is a local thing so you’re safe to basically just put the credentials in plaintext. Be sure not to remove the OTP section tho even if you don’t use it because I did that first and got hours.</p>
