I found out last night that our house helper doesn't know how to read and write. (Middle class in the Philippines can hire helpers). I've been texting her for months but I didn't receive a reply because she actually doesn't know how to read. Illiteracy really concerns me. 😔 Now I have to teach her.

@whitequark Lots of stuff has changed since a few years ago, so it might be worth trying Wayland, but don’t feel like you have to.

@dalias i currently have a

xinput set-button-map "DLL075B:01 06CB:76AF Touchpad" 1 1 3 4 5

in my .xsessionrc (why is this not the same thing as .xsession? mystery)

so presumably i've encountered the same problem and couldn't fix it otherwise at some point in the map

that said i don't think it needs .xsession, it can just as well live in an autostart script that KDE provides

@dalias KDE has a very detailed keyboard configurator (it exposes basically all of setxkbmap, with a much less suffering-inducing syntax), but not that much for mouse and touchpad

i would tell you what's the status of touchpad but due to an infuriating hardware bug related to the I2C controller in this laptop it's currently offline and i'd have to hard-reboot to fix it

imagine shipping a major version upgrade so good that someone has to fix their setup _and yet chooses to give you money anyway_

every vendor should aspire to this

i gave KDE e.V. a hundred euro per year

@tef this aligns with my strategy

@whitequark it's worth noting that kde used qt/c++ despite being non-free originally, because they felt it would make a better environment
