i was under the mistaken impression that RTD3 is needed for the nvidia card to not consume like 10 watts when it's not in use, but it turns out that if you never load the driver it ends up in normal D3 and that works just fine

here's the driver that does this https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/0af2f6be1b4281385b618cb86ad946eded089ac8/drivers/thermal/intel/intel_pch_thermal.c#L303

it does nothing else. it exists exclusively to let the PCH cool down before s2idle

@whitequark something tells me there's an errata explaining why that is

apparently linux will refuse entering the S0ix power state if the PCH is too hot (above 50 degrees), so whenever this happens the kernel sleeps for 300ms to let the PCH cool down

this is cursed

i have figured out what this issue was https://mastodon.social/@whitequark/113818757427551245

it turns out that merely loading nvidia.ko and enabling RTD3 (without having the driver loaded in X11, or any screen or device in the configuration!!) is sufficient for electron based apps to do *something* with the nvidia device, and because RTD3 seems fucked in TU117M, it would hang until, presumably, the PCIe completion timeout

computers were a mistake
