if I'm being honest this software has a UI polish in the top 10% of what I've seen from GPL software. it doesn't look like an enterprise java app from 2001, and it isn't particularly cluttered. if it wasn't abysmally slow and didn't have completely weird shortcut keys and actually had a manual that was correct and up to date, it'd be pretty exceptionally good for open source science software. but for normie users (and my wife is far better than the average at this) it's still super high friction

it crashed so we're stopping for a pizza break

it went full screen and has no indication for a method to exit full screen. if you try to alt tab out it continues to capture focus, so you can't read the manual to find out how to exit full screen mode.

the "exit full screen" shortcut turned out to be ctrl-Q. naturally.

honestly I'm just surprised it even has a manual available

she is making angry noises because she's trying to follow the manual but the UI is completely different to the images in the manual and does not behave in the manner described in the manual.

also it is extraordinarily slow. some of the buttons have >5 second response times.

my wife, downloading some astronomy software that makes you accept the GNU GPL in its installer: "I'm actually really looking forward to using this, it sounds really cool"

me, in my head: "I guarantee this software is going to have awful UX and I don't have the heart to tell her"

my wife, three minutes later: "I changed my mind I fucking hate this software"

@robpike Oh, I know why, but I just don't want to say the quiet part out loud.
