Every election politicians say "this is the most important election of your life"; people grow weary of hearing it and stop believing it. I thought this US one would be pretty consequential, but I didn't think it would be one of the most consequential in the world in 250 years.

Was only about 30 minutes after sunset. Was moving fast--exactly like ISS moves (which I've seen before). Was about the same brightness as Mars when it passed overhead. Maybe BlueWalker 3?

Got a pretty good view of the planets last night. Definitely saw Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury. Saturn a bit fleeting and low on horizon. Also saw a *very* bright fast moving satellite--at least as bright as the ISS normally is. However, ISS tracker had that in a completely different location so it definitely wasn't that. So, no idea.

Long in the tooth, not really relevant anymore, and - like so many good things - strangled by Microsoft's acquisition and long neglect, but still: RIP to a legend.

If the idea of paying several dollars a minute to call somebody in the next town or across the country or on the far side of an ocean is completely ridiculous to you, this software is why. Long-distance relationships were _expensive_.

Skype was a goddamn miracle when it came out, absolutely world-changing.

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/02/on-may-5-microsofts-skype-will-shut-down-for-good/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social
