<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://chaos.social/@gsuberland" class="u-url mention">@<span>gsuberland</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://pleroma.m68k.church/users/gorplop" class="u-url mention">@<span>gorplop</span></a></span> I think a lot of open hardware projects are &quot;open in name only&quot; and they might as well come as a parts kit from China and I would be none the wiser, yes; the OSHWA rubberstamp kind of just tells me &quot;I can clone this thing and not get sued&quot; which gives me, personally, as a non-production-run-enjoyer, very little</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://chaos.social/@gsuberland" class="u-url mention">@<span>gsuberland</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@whitequark" class="u-url mention">@<span>whitequark</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://pleroma.m68k.church/users/gorplop" class="u-url mention">@<span>gorplop</span></a></span> It&#39;s that &quot;free as in beer&quot; vs &quot;free as in freedom&quot; argument again really. Is it so free I can make one, or so free I can remix it to suit my needs, and everyone else can too?</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://chaos.social/@gsuberland" class="u-url mention">@<span>gsuberland</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://pleroma.m68k.church/users/gorplop" class="u-url mention">@<span>gorplop</span></a></span> so now that I&#39;ve talked to its designer there&#39;s a series of youtube videos on the AFE design, which goes a long way towards making it *usefully* open rather than merely *having openly available assets you may not even known what to do with*</p><p>sure, for very simple hardware it&#39;s the same. but even something as relatively simple as the Glasgow Interface Explorer wouldn&#39;t be quite okay if it was just gerbers and not, e.g., &quot;here&#39;s why you shouldn&#39;t replace the LDO&quot;</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@whitequark" class="u-url mention">@<span>whitequark</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://pleroma.m68k.church/users/gorplop" class="u-url mention">@<span>gorplop</span></a></span> I would tend to agree, but ironically this is a level of documentation that almost no open source hardware has, including some of the most lauded projects celebrated as archetypal examples of the practice.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://chaos.social/@gsuberland" class="u-url mention">@<span>gsuberland</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://pleroma.m68k.church/users/gorplop" class="u-url mention">@<span>gorplop</span></a></span> stuff I would need to get a usable piece of hardware instead of a hardware-shaped doorstep</p><p>like I have Thunderscope for example on my desk, there&#39;s schematics, there&#39;s gerbers, but without extensive documentation and, let&#39;s be real, a discord DM with its designer it&#39;s more of a doorstep than an oscilloscope</p>
<p>Frunsi wanted permission to package <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/krita" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>krita</span></a> with their Android art tablet. There&#39;s no problem with that, of course! They sent me one of their tablets, and I have to say, I&#39;m quite impressed. Feels nice, great screen, really complete -- even comes with gloves, a manual, a spare battery and more:</p>
