<p>Hey <a href="https://mastodon.mauve.moe/tags/Ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Ottawa</span></a> ! I'm planning to start a new meetup for decentralized tech next month on Friday May 19th. Anyone interested in joining in? We'll start by looking at some <a href="https://mastodon.mauve.moe/tags/p2p" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>p2p</span></a> file sharing protocols.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@kev" class="u-url mention">@<span>kev</span></a></span> I get snap being disliked - but unless you have an operational reason to disable them, why? </p><p>Certain system programs (firmware updater comes to mind) use snap, just don't use it and perhaps remove the snap store if you don't want it personally.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@kev" class="u-url mention">@<span>kev</span></a></span> I followed this guide to remove them and everythingโs been running just fine for about 6 months.</p><p>I followed the same guide on my previous machine, but I canโt remember how long I ran it that way before repurposing the machine โ maybe around the same length of time?</p><p><a href="https://www.debugpoint.com/remove-snap-ubuntu/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">debugpoint.com/remove-snap-ubu</span><span class="invisible">ntu/</span></a></p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@Gina" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>Gina</span></a></span> I agree! I guess my main concern is really just that the technical aspect of moving from one server to another is still less than smooth. Historical data loss aside, I'm getting a lot of "new" follows from people that have been following me for years, and that just comes down to technical limitations.</p><p>Anyway, bit of a bummer but not a massive deal.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@kev" class="u-url mention">@<span>kev</span></a></span> No. `apt purge snapd` followed by `apt-mark hold snapd` are standard practice for me. </p><p>You'll need a non-snap browser install though. <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://linuxrocks.online/@tuxedocomputers" class="u-url mention">@<span>tuxedocomputers</span></a></span> has helpful apt repos for that.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@zak" class="u-url mention">@<span>zak</span></a></span> and yet it's stronger than, say Twitter, against hostile takeovers. That's the benefit of being federated (aka if you don't like your server you can always threaten to leave, or leave, to enact change).</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@kev" class="u-url mention">@<span>kev</span></a></span> I go look for the deb package if I want it. Otherwise, Ubuntu's rock solid for me.</p>
<p>So I've been running <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Ubuntu</span></a> for the last couple days and I have to say, it's been great. Very stable and no real issues to talk of. Snaps are still a bit shit, but a couple of commands later and I have Flatpak support.</p><p>Question - does Ubuntu shit the bed entirely if you remove Snaps all together?</p>
