<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@dabeaz" class="u-url mention">@<span>dabeaz</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@djmitche" class="u-url mention">@<span>djmitche</span></a></span> Every bit of coding I've done in my previous role (which admittedly isn't a lot - I've become a manager) has been to clean up tech debt created by well-intentioned human beings _before_ LLMs were invented, so it turns out I'm doing it anyway :-)</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@djmitche" class="u-url mention">@<span>djmitche</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson" class="u-url mention">@<span>gvwilson</span></a></span> Lucrative it might be, but would I want to do it? I don't know. Obviously can't speak for others.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson" class="u-url mention">@<span>gvwilson</span></a></span> So thinking is involved?</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson" class="u-url mention">@<span>gvwilson</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@dabeaz" class="u-url mention">@<span>dabeaz</span></a></span> there are electricians and plumbers that specialize in fixing DIY gone wrong. Software engineering will very soon have a similar role, and I expect it will be very lucrative!</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@dabeaz" class="u-url mention">@<span>dabeaz</span></a></span> so hm, I guess what I'm thinking is "a workshop on code review for the stuff that isn't immediately obvious plus review-guided refactoring for the bits that aren't repetitive enough that LLMs have lots of examples to learn from".</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@dabeaz" class="u-url mention">@<span>dabeaz</span></a></span> I don't expect so - Claude has done a very good job of writing unit tests for the code I'm working on, and with 2-3 routes in a Flask application as guides it does a good job of writing the next half dozen. I wouldn't expect to delete-and-start-over with its code any more than I would with a junior dev's, but your mileage may vary.</p>
<p>We treat people with respect, even if they don't regard us at first, because we are respectful. We forgive mistakes. But if they keep being abusive and disrespectful, stop showing them respect. They have no right to expect it from you and don't deserve it.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson" class="u-url mention">@<span>gvwilson</span></a></span> Ooh. Two things I love--deleting everything and greenfield development.</p>
