<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://hachyderm.io/@twp" class="u-url mention">@<span>twp</span></a></span> I feel like there's a kind of sleight-of-hand going on with these ALPR cameras. There is a huge emphasis on "personal identifying information" and "data retention", but it's entirely centered around video footage. For example, images don't show faces or passengers. The contracts also state that the video footage belongs to the city and no one else. Ok, fine.</p><p>But, what about the plate number? Clearly it's run against a DB. Are there logs? Who owns that? A lot of details are fuzzy.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@gamingonlinux" class="u-url mention">@<span>gamingonlinux</span></a></span> </p><p>Those numbers are wild. Android / browser counting as Windows doesn't seem right, but I guess they have to count towards something.</p><p>"If you want to ensure developers see a Linux sale: play it only on Linux in the first two weeks, don't buy it and leave it."</p><p>Super-good to know. Will do in the future!</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://recurse.social/@stephenrkell" class="u-url mention">@<span>stephenrkell</span></a></span> I usually mix things up with coding exercises so I'm not always actively talking. However, something is usually going on for the whole day. </p><p>There are some interesting tradeoffs though. I don't grade papers or hold office hours. Also, since the course is "all at once", there's a certain flow to the whole affair. </p><p>I also feel like there's a pretty clean separation between "teaching" and "not teaching" which was difficult to achieve in academia.</p>
<p>Steam sees a big rise in Simplified Chinese for February 2025 bringing Linux down below 2% <a href="https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/03/steam-sees-a-big-rise-in-simplified-chinese-for-february-2025-bringing-linux-down-below-2p/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">gamingonlinux.com/2025/03/stea</span><span class="invisible">m-sees-a-big-rise-in-simplified-chinese-for-february-2025-bringing-linux-down-below-2p/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Steam" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Steam</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Windows</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/macOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>macOS</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/PCGaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PCGaming</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Gaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Gaming</span></a></p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://recurse.social/@stephenrkell" class="u-url mention">@<span>stephenrkell</span></a></span> Should emphasize that the teaching is intense and full time when I'm doing it. 25 weeks means a solid week (40 hours). So about 1000 hours a year of actually teaching.</p>
<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://recurse.social/@stephenrkell" class="u-url mention">@<span>stephenrkell</span></a></span> I'd say I mainly teach experienced programmers who want to learn something interesting, but without having to enroll in graduate school. </p><p>I consistently spend about 25 weeks of the year actively teaching. The rest is spent "messing around" (although that includes course prep). I never try to profit from the messing around.</p><p>I like this model because it's straightforward. I teach a class. You pay me. It ends when the class ends. I do whatever I want outside of that.</p>
