I often hear people say, "Women aren't audiophiles." Which confuses me because I meet women all the time who are involved in activities deemed "audiophile". As in, it's easy to find a woman with a good turntable and stereo system. If that weren't true, there wouldn't be so many female DJs out there spinning records. Yet there are and these women are evidently knowledgeable enough to procure audiophile-quality gear. Nevertheless, while I've never met a woman who's self-identified as an audiophile, identifying *as* something is not the same thing as "not being involved in a hobby". There might be many, *many* reasons why people don't base their identity on their hobbies.
