Thinking a bit more, I don't think I actually need to have a hard "never use SO" rule.

What I can do instead is, default SO to tristated / JTAG mode.

And in a few specific commands like "query bootloader flash status" enable SPI mode on that pin (resetting jtag in the process due to the errata) and then immediately return to normal mode.

It means that single-stepping through that part of the code won't work, but I'll still be able to reset or power cycle the chip and have JTAG functional again for flashing or debugging of anything but the bootloader.

@whitequark@mastodon.social @lilacTeeth@mastodon.social out of curiosity, what's your opinion of Signal, in that light?

I like #Nix, I do not like what has happened to it. #NixOS is an incredible technology and it deserves better. Nobody else has started the process so I guess I have to be the one to do it. We are forking. I would rather try and fail alongside all the people who love Nix but were pushed away from the project than give up.

https://aux.computer/

This was really weird because over the 23 hour period I sent like 3 additional messages and it showed my messages with no apparent errors just none of the responses were visible. Moreover I was having bidirectional conversations with no issues in other windows. But nothing coming from Whitequark was coming through. That is a very, very bad failure mode for a IM client. I expect IM clients will have failure modes but I expect I don't have to watch out for this one. https://mastodon.social/@whitequark/112355001355211609
